Urk... it most likely was spyware, actually. That kind of spyware is known as 'rogue anti-spyware'. It's basically spyware that pretends to be a spyware program, and can do things from scamming you out of your money and doing nothing to help your computer to sending computer statistics to other companies for advertising, as well as possibly putting other nasties on there.
How long did you have your old computer before your dad replaced it?
