Mario Del Monaco - Nessun dorma...

Mario Del Monaco is one of three or four of my favourite tenors. His "Dio, mi potevi scagliar" or "Forse la soglia attinse", or "Amor ti vieta", or e.g. "L´anima ho stanca" are unrivalled. Only Domingo (mainly as Radames or Cavaradossi) or Corelli (as Chenier or Manrico) there is possible to compare with his vocal beauty... sometimes, namely in Amor ti vieta ("vieta") or Forse la soglia ("palpito", "sotto") or Lamento (phrase "il dolce sembiante" - vocal "A") are his vocals incomparable beautifull...

Oh for what concerns Pavarotti I have absolutely no problem agreeing with you; if you ask me i'd say he was overrated. Sure he had good technique and power well over the average but his voice was cold and lacked pathos. He had his glorious moments, I'm not denying that, but those did not last very long and they were certainly not enough to earn him a place in the pantheon of opera.

Hej PicBit! Yes i accept your taste - no problems! I also enjoy MDM:s singing oh yes! But i like more the clean pure silver tone with the enormous cadenza on the high notes of Björling - thats me. BUT my reply was not about wich is the best Nessun Dorma, it was a replay to castorp278 concerning Pavarotti .... read yourself his comments. This is not a matter of taste it´s easy to see that Björling can hold the high notes longer than Pavarotti - thats all!

Bjorling is surely a great voice, but i'm sorry I have to say I prefer Del Monaco by far. His darker tune, his incredible power and extension make me say this. It's a personal opinion though, probably due to the fact i particularly like dark voices (i'm a baritone myself after all ;p).

They come to the best. Youre all right Del Monaco is the standard. Please dont be sore losers by writing about your favorite and how theyre better, nor rank them. Go to your favorites blog and criticize them. Mario is number one and then start to rank yours second and then whos third, fourth, etc. But please put the truth down. Mario Del Monaco is the pinnacle!! Your criticizing him shows how afraid you are that you might be wrong about who you say is the best.

Hej castorp! Pavarotti is one of the best-oh yes! But when it comes to the final notes there is only one tenor - Jussi Björling! Listen to "Jussis best Nessun Dorma" and then "La Donna Mobile correct pitch" Listen also to an alltime high C in "la Soglia" from New Orleans 1950.

Straight like an arrow. No blinking whatsoever. Please, remember, the time and technique was differentBottom line is: This man has nothing to hide!

Not bad. Bjorling is still the tops!

Certainly Pavarotti had some great vocal moments - however, his affectations and predictable shading and acting (and he acted badly even in recitals, more so in recitals) left me cold. His girth was disturbing and yes, his pomposity. Mario del Monaco not only has the powerhouse voice, the extraordinary vocal agility and sheer magnetism that comes from a very handsome man, but he has a great stage presence and a genuine understanding of the lyrics. Superb. Many thanks for posting this.

I would like to make comparison on ''La donna e mobile'' and ''Nessun dorma'' performed by Pavarotti and other tenors, including Del Monaco. I think Pavarotti beats other tenors when it comes to the final notes of both arias. All tenors can compare to Pavarotti's performance (colour of the voice) but when it comes to the final notes he owns both arias. I think of his ''Rigoletto'' recording with Bonynge, Sutherland and Milnes, and ''Turandot'' recording with Mehta, Sutherland and Caballe.
