If not for colonialism Malaysians Indonesians and Filipinos would be the same people and speak the Malaysian as a lingua franca. BTW before the Spanish colonised in the Philippines Malay was the lingua franca not Tagalog. So if Filipinos want to get closer to their roots they should learn Malay.
