No one mentions ND's jazz influence-he played sax and clarinet in a jazz band,
River Man is in 5/4, uses jazz harmony-Eb13 Abmaj9 CAug11 and has a very modern string arrangement.
Check out Judee Sill to hear another under-appreciated folk-based singer/songwriter from the early 70s.
