Well it almost is. During World War 2 the Japanese invaded Korea and the occupation was brutal. Like the European colonizers the Japanese made the Koreans take Japanese names

I know that the Chinese, Japanese, and Koreans learn from each other and share several cultural elements and traditions, so I hesitate to think that it's as black and white as that.
