Yes you are right , invincible they were not . But the 3 examples you quoted happened over a 150 year period and the legions in each case were not led by a Ceaser or Pompey , Scipio , Seutonious , aurelian or a Corbulo - But I still believe that a roman army led by one of those leaders could of beaten anyone up to 1200 AD

"Invivible" is a big word to use. as for the Romans, they were not invincible. For example, Carrhae, fought in 53 BC (only a few years off from the setting of this series) was a Roman military disaster second only to Cannae and our next example, Teutoburg Forest AD 9 (a few years after the series) where 3 legions were wiped out in 3 days of fighting. So to summerize, the ROman army, while strong, was not invincible.

I understand your points on religion but thats not my point , pullo and vorenos are set in 50 years before the birth of christ , at this point in history the roman heavy infantry was invincible , As for the U.S. I never mentioned them as I said us . Just look how in the first century when the jews rebelled for the 3rd time how Titus flattened Jerusalem killing everything inside - regardless of public opinium

you said "in the roman empire they as the only world superpower would not have the sameproblems we now experience with the Shia muslims" you are the one who compared Rome and the US saying they didn't have problems with religious nutters Rome was lasted centuries and the Roman Empire did have the similar problems that 'we'(whoever we are) have with Shia muslims. They were just called Christians or if you want to be technical, we could call them donatists or arians or even just plain catholics

Ceaser was 50 BC , thats means before christians so if you are going to make comments about my comments at least know your history
chickinchainmail (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
no, they had the Christians to fight against. If you going to make comments like that, at least know your history. I can see a direct corollary between fundamentalist Islamic terrorists today with rampaging christian monks in Egypt 3rd Century who would mob towns, burn down temples and assassinate leading pagans.

Can't remember the last time I enjoyed a TV series this much. Actually I watched it on DVD first (several times) then on TV. Pullo, what a fantastic character, you've gotta love him. My husband says he's just like a lot of squaddies he knew. The acting with Pullo and Vorenus was brilliant. Loved it, loved it, loved it. Wish they could find a way to continue the story.
