A Fatwa (religious edict) can only be given by a recognized religious council -- never by an individual or a group of individuals or by a family.
So this story isn't believable.

it is very interesting how you highlighted the death sentence (from wikipedia) although you did not actually explain that on wikipedia, it says that this is an incorrect definition of fatwa "Western media frequently uses the term incorrectly to specifically mean an Islamic law pronouncing a death sentence upon someone who is considered an infidel or a blasphemer, whereas the term's correct definition is significantly broader"

yo man. not just any guy can issue a fatwa. you have to be a Muslim scholar to do that.
Also, Islam is a just religion. There is no death sentence unless you kill someone, spread corruption in the land or commit adultery(with a married person).
Even if you were charged with a crime, you would still have to go to trial with a judge. Nobody can take the law in their own hands.
