Michael McIntyre on Mock The Week: "T'Lion N't T' The"

Michael McIntyre on a Mock The Week roll, taking the absolute crap out of my home town Leeds, the Yorkshire accent and pronunciation of "The". Now, may I at this point mention that their are some slight factual inaccuracies in his commentary. "The", in the north, is not actually pronounced "t" at all. It is in fact silent and pronounced with little more than an accented last letter of the word preceding the "the". For example, "The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe" would be pronounced "Lion Witch N' Wardrobe" with slight emphasis on the trailing "n"'s. Likewise, "The The" would be pronounced with little more than a blank stare and a couple of grunts. But he was close enough :oP

I'm proud to be from Manchester, no one says 'the' all THE time just because it's gramatically correct, it's not neccessary. I wish someone would have spoken about how southeners drop all the 'H's in their words but because he's a posh boy he's picking on THE northeners. He makes us sound stupid when we're just as good (well better let's be honest) as people from THE south.

I think it's what makes England so great, we're never gonna get on, so we just sit in the pub and grumble about it :D I'm a southerner but I study in Preston, Lancs, so I've seen both sides of the line

This makes me laugh till I cry. I am a Northerner and I can identify with dropping the t's. Lancashire's my neck of the woods and people here do drop their t's or prounounce 'bottle' as if it had a 'k'(bockle) and 'middle' with a 'g' (miggle). It makes me laugh when someone tries to impersonate the accent. :) To the few Southerners who are saying that Northerners are barbarians, did it ever occur to you that we might feel the same about you?

I'm from Yorkshire and this isn't true. We don't just say 't', we mostly just don't say the word 'the' at all. I would say "Lion, Witch n Wardrobe". If I was saying "Are you going to the cinema", then I would say "Are you going t' cinema", so some is true. Michael <3

With the band 'The The' I just say it. It's not like "the" isn't in our vocabulary, or we just can't say it.
